The first reported sports meeting there was on Easter Monday and Tuesday 1879, which included athletics and shooting matches and a steeple chase with a water jump.

The sports continued the following year and there were meetings on 17th July, 2nd August, 14th August, 4th September and 20th September. The sports usually included running races and sometimes pony racing. The bicycle race was normally a three miles handicap.

It was reported that WG Grace** used to drink at the Old Fox occasionally after cricket matches before returning to his surgery at 59 Stapleton Road.

Sport at the Old Fox was short lived and there are no reports of sports meetings after 1881, this was probably because the Stapleton Bridge Athletic Grounds opened in 1881 and had a cinder track. The 1901 Ordnance Survey map shows that the Old Fox grounds had been developed for housing. The M32 and A432 new roads cut through the Fox Lane area, but the original Old Fox pub still exists at 60 Fox Road and is now multi-occupancy flats.

** WG Grace (1848-1923) was probably the most famous English cricketer who ever lived, he scored over 54,000 runs and took 2,800 wickets in first class cricket and played in twenty two test matches. He was a massive celebrity and could command large fees wherever he played.
