It took a few years before bicycle racing was held at Cale Green, the first reported race was at the Stockport Athletic Sports on June 30th 1888. At the meeting there were bicycle handicap races over one and two miles, which became a regular feature of the sports. The bicycle races usually attracted a good field of competitors from the North and Midlands.
The cricket club seemed to have had a dispute with the AAA in the early 1890s about including amateurs and professionals in their sports. The outcome of this dispute was that the cricket club experimented by making their sports open only to professionals in 1894, with prize winners receiving cash. The meeting remained professional until 1899 and the number of bicycle races increased and included a half mile ladies race in 1896. The meetings were popular and drew a crowd of 4,000 in 1898.
Unfortunately the cricket club annual sports seemed to have lapsed around 1900. There was an attempt to re-establish the sports when the Railway Employees held a meeting at Cale Green on August 31st 1903, which included half and one mile open bicycle handicap races. There were over six hundred entries for twenty events at the meeting and £60 in prize money. Unfortunately this attempt failed and the annual sports were not held again and there was no further bicycle racing at the ground.
Cale Green Park and the adjacent cricket pitch still exist. The park is a very popular local amenity and the cricket ground is still the home of Stockport Cricket Club.
Cycling was very popular in Stockport and in the 1880s several bicycle clubs were set up in the town, these included: Stockport Bicycle Club which was established in 1878, Stockport Cycling Club 1885, Stockport Social Cycling Club 1886, Heaton Norris Bicycle Club 1890, Stockport Wheelers 1896, Sunbeam Cycling Club 1900 and Stockport Clarion 1902, which still exists.
