Dundee Bicycle Club formed in 1881 and they organised a club race meeting at Dundee High School grounds in 1882.
The Victoria Athletics Grounds in James Park, opened in 1887 and contained a pear shaped cinder bicycle racing track six laps to the mile and twenty feet wide, there were also facilities for athletics and tennis. The ground opened on 16th July 1887 with the 6th East of Scotland Cyclist Meet with a procession of 200 cyclists who rode from Albert Square to the ground. The bicycle races were handicap events over 1, 2 and 3 miles and a 1 mile tricycle race. The 3 miles race was won by the New Zealander G Duncan. The scratch man DW Laing, refused to race on the track, as the corners were soft and sharp.
There was a 13 hour bicycle race, spread over several evenings, that started on 18th July 1887 with eleven riders. The winner was JW Baird of Albert CC who achieved a total of 201 miles. The last bicycle race of the year on 27th August saw a low entry and a disappointingly poor crowd.
There was a twenty miles professional handicap race on 14th April 1888 and the following week, on 21st April, there was an athletics meeting with one and three miles amateur bicycle races. The attendance at these events was poor and it seems that no other bicycle races were held at the ground after this. The Dundee Athletic Grounds at Carolina Port opened in 1891 and bicycle racing was successfully held there for several years.
The site of the Athletic Grounds around the existing Erskine and Matilda Streets have been developed for housing and light industry.
