At the opening meeting of the new track on 29 July 1899 was organized by the East London Whippet and Athletic Club and there were bicycle races along with running and whippet races. There were 1,000 spectators at the meeting and two bicycle races. The three miles open handicap had seven competitors and in the one mile ladies handicap, there were only two competitors with Miss Pearce off scratch, easily beat Miss Loyde off 50 yards. The Walthamstow Prize Band played and admission cost sixpence.

Clapton Orient, who would later be known as Leyton Orient FC held their athletic sports at the grounds from 1899, but did not include bicycle racing.

The Greenwood Cycling Club were formed in 1899 and made their headquarters at the ground. Their first race meeting there, for club members, was on 10 December 1899 with one, three and five miles races.
