The National Coal Board bought Gresley Old Hall, which dates back to Elizabeth I times, and the surrounding 70 acres, for use as the Church Gresley Miners Welfare Centre, the building opened in 1956. There were sports facilities in the ground and sports meetings with running and field events were held. There was cycle racing at the ground on a grass track, four laps to the mile. Information about cycling at Church Gresley is sparse, the 1955 NCU Racing Handbook carries a full page advertisement for the August Bank holiday sports in 1955, which lists the following cycle races; 440 and 880 yards handicap, 500 yards scratch and a five miles scratch race. The would have been other August Bank holiday sports after this, but the only meeting reported in the press was in 1957.
The Gresley Colliery Miners Welfare Club held their sports 27th July 1957 and Olympic hopeful riders Ken Harrison and Harry Reynolds, were competing. The bicycle races were men's 440 and 880 yards handicaps, women's 440 yards handicap and a men's seven and a half minutes pursuit race, a 500 yards men's scratch race, a devil and a five miles scratch. Harry Hardcastle of Manchester Wheelers won the five miles scratch from Harry Reynolds, Solihull CC. The attendance was very poor because of the very windy and showery weather.
The Old Hall is now a community welfare building and there are sporting activities in the grounds including Church Gresley Indoor Bowling Centre, South Derbyshire Miners Welfare Bowls Club and Gresley FC Academy Pitches.
